Madeira

The Autonomous Region of Madeira, a politically independent archipelago located less than 400 miles from the coast of Africa, has named their Free Industrial Zone the Madeira International Business Centre (MIBC), and has become not only a popular travel destination and port but a vital partner in offshore yacht and ship registrations.

The International Shipping Registry of Madeira registers marine vessels under the Portuguese flag, provided that:

  • The ship’s captain and half the crew are EU citizens, or citizens of Portuguese-speaking African countries (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe).
  • If the vessel is being used for shipping, the goods must be destined for ports outside of Portugal.

The International Shipping Registry of Madeira works in concert with the International Maritime Organisation for the protection, maintenance and inspection of their registered marine vessels, and as such are associated with seven recognized certification societies:

American Bureau of Shipping
Bureau Veritas
Det Norske Veritas
Lloyd's Register of Shipping
Nippon Kaiji Kyokai
Registro Italiano Navale
Rinave Portuguesa
